Another One Bites the Dust
Valerie & John are married! Yesterday, October 7, John and Valerie tied the knot at Seven Holy Founders Catholic Church. I was late to everything. Afton is FAR AWAY. Plus, it didn't help that mapquest gives you wrong directions. I hate being late.

While they are soaking up the sun in Hawaii, I will recap.

Everything was gorgeous (no big surprise there), and the Chicago Bears theming was very subtle (good compromising, kids). There was John's vest, plus football and helmet table cards, but those were the only overt football parts. The bridesmaids' dresses and centerpieces were navy blue with orange gerber daisies.

(This photo is the result of quite a bit of coaching of Val's Dad--"Just hold down the button. No, hold it down. Longer than that. No, longer than that. Just--just hold it down for a WHILE.")

I got the last picture of the night before they headed out. Big thanks to Jen for lending me the dress, as I discovered that most of my dresses are very spring-like.

The photographer they hired was REALLY good. They had a monitor set up at the reception that was previewing a bunch of the pictures they'd taken that afternoon, and they were all really pretty and arty. Lots of oblique stuff, which is exactly what I'd want from a wedding photographer. Worth whatever they paid for it. The pictures are supposed to be up online, but as of this afternoon, it was just the engagement photos (which are also very pretty).

See? Pretty & Arty:

Spent a lovely evening with the Littles, Powerses, Burketts and Bull/Miller. Amy was the maid of honor and she did a very good job. We were a little slow to take the dance floor (I, personally, was enjoying the dance stylings of Spazzy McGee--the 7(?)-year-old boy throwing himself around the dance floor). But when the music kicked up, we got down.

TIP TO WEDDING DJs: If you play a song (let's say "Bad Boys", for the sake of argument) and it clears the dance floor INSTANTLY, fade that shit out and play something else. Don't just stand there staring down into your playlist pretending you haven't just killed the dance floor crowd.

Val & John probably didn't realize they'd done it, but they somehow managed to pick "wedding weekend" for the Catholic Church. Today at mass with my mom we had the 1st reading from Genesis with "flesh of my flesh, bone of my bone" and "this is why the man leaves his parents and clings to his wife" as well as the Gospel reading with "What God has joined, let no human being separate." Plus, we even sang a hymn with the text from First Corinthians (Love is... blah, blah, blah).

Saw "Employee of the Month" with Mom at the Mills. The alternate choices were slim (mostly horror movies and Jackass 2--Mom wasn't feeling "The Departed"), but it was better than I expected. They've got a big lineup of funny guys, and they keep Jessica Simpson exactly where she belongs--on the sidelines with very little dialogue. Her father is one of the producers; did you know that? He is the PUPPET MASTER!!!

I had to laugh out loud at the DJ comment...too funny! Also, I never EVER thought I would hear the COPS theme song played at a wedding reception. *kim*

Maybe--MAYBE--during the groomsmen's entrance. But yeah, she was a little nutso.

I'm really glad someone got to wear the dress because I sure wasn't going to wear it anytime soon. That is a VERY understanding bride to let her groom wear that vest.
